Description

Jordan and Iran, whose ties soured after Tehran's 1997 Islamic revolution, are working on improving their relations, despite the fact that their standings vis-a-vis US Middle Eastern policies are different, the London-based daily AL HAYAT reported on Dec. 24. "After years of aversion, it seems that Jordan and Iran are heading towards breaking the ice at the level of their leaders, who are scheduled to hold a summit sometime in early 2011," the Saudi-owned newspaper said in an Amman-datelined report. "Yet, the two countries are not likely to change their policies, which brought Jordan to the 'moderate' camp and Iran to the radical one," it added, referring to pro-and anti-US Middle East countries in the region. The summit, whose exact date and place are yet to be decided, would be the first between Jordanian King Abdullah II and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad since the latter's controversial reelection in 2009. Abdullah II told an envoy of Ahmadinejad in Amman on Dec. 14 he wanted to improve his country's relations with Iran. The Jordanian monarch received an official invitation to visit Iran from the President but the date of the visit has not been set yet. In US cables released by WikiLeaks, US Ambassador to Jordan Stephen Beecroft quoted Jordanian officials as describing Iran as an "octopus" whose tentacles "reach out insidiously to manipulate, foment and undermine the best-laid plans of the West and regional moderates."
